Jay Sbrollini

Jay graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked as a systems engineer at TRW Space and Defense on ballistic missile systems. After leaving engineering Jay attended law school at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Suffolk University, Jay worked toward a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, which he received from Boston University.

Jay began his legal career with Banner & Witkoff in Washington, D.C. where he gained experience in drafting and prosecuting quality patent applications in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He then worked as an IP Attorney at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center where he was responsible for evaluating inventions as well as preparing and prosecuting patent applications over a wide range of electrical and computer-related technologies, including microprocessor architectures and systems, software technologies and systems, LCD display systems, and deep computing algorithms. He also gained valuable experience in technology licensing and transfer as well as patent enforcement.

Since joining Gordon & Jacobson in 2000, Jay has worked with and advised start-up companies, Fortune 500 companies and individuals in protecting their intellectual property. Jay prepares and prosecutes patent and trademark applications, prepares legal opinions to defend and protect client rights, and negotiates and drafts intellectual property agreements. Jay also provides support to IP Litigation counsel by analyzing infringement and invalidity issues when appropriate and necessary.

Jay has experience in technology related to diverse and complex fields, such as computer systems (including web-based system architectures and methods for online businesses and financial services), software technologies (including web-based programming tools and infrastructure), telecommunication systems (including 3G and 4G architectures and technologies), optoelectronic circuits and systems (including VCSELS and planar lightwave circuits), solar field technologies, downhole tools for oil and gas field analysis, and medical devices (in ophthalmology, endoscopy and laparoscopy). Jay draws from his wide range of experience in these diverse fields to understand the fundamental problems solved by complex inventions and craft high quality patent applications that clearly describe the respective inventions and differentiate the claims of the patent applications over the relevant prior art.
